keyboard reach, contrast, zoom, and the year chart in words

Access measures on this site, including the year chart written out in words

Roving Hours books twenty eight dated trips across the year, from $3,061 to $6,939 per person, and every window can be read, priced and requested with a keyboard alone or with a screen reader. This page sets out the measures actually in place, gives the contrast figures and the zoom behavior, and describes how the twelve month chart is put into words for a reader who cannot see it. A closing section names four things that still fall short.

Everything here works from a keyboard. Tab moves through links, fields and the rows of the year chart in reading order, Shift and Tab move back, and Enter or the space bar operates whatever holds focus. No control answers to a pointer only, and the cursor is never caught anywhere. Focus carries a two pixel outline over a pale halo, legible on pale paper and on the darker bands of the trip pages.

Each page opens with a link past the header into the main region, first for the Tab key and visible once focused. Headings descend in order, one h1 then h2 for each section, with no level skipped to reach a smaller size, so the heading list a screen reader offers is the outline of the page. Banner, navigation, main, footer and the request form are marked as regions.

Reading the chart aloud

The twelve month chart is the hardest thing here to make readable, since it carries its meaning by position and width. It is a table rather than a picture: a row for each of the twenty eight windows, a column for each week, and a written summary on every bar giving in words what the drawing gives in shape, namely the trip, its first and last date, the weeks between the two, the hour mark from one to four, and the figure per person.

Row and column headers are declared, so software can say which month a cell sits in while moving sideways. what is open in the weeks you can travel sets out the same catalogue a month at a time in plain lists with the dates spelled out, so nothing lives in the chart alone. Color repeats what is already written: an hour mark is a numeral inside its bar and a word in the summary.

Size, spacing and contrast

Dark ink on pale paper measures 12.4 to 1 for body text and 9.1 to 1 for the smallest type used anywhere. Links sit at 7.3 to 1 and are underlined, so color is never the only signal. Type follows the reader's own default size. The layout reflows to a single column at 320 pixels and at 400 percent zoom, with no sideways scrolling to finish a sentence, and zoom is blocked nowhere. Spacing can be overridden to line height 1.5, paragraph 2, letter 0.12 and word 0.16, with nothing clipped or overlapping.

Pictures, forms and mistakes

Every picture has a description saying what is in the frame and in which month it was made. Rules and textures that mean nothing carry an empty description and are skipped. No figure or date sits inside an image.

Each field on the request form has a visible label tied to it, and the label stays on screen while you type. Where a field wants a date in a particular shape, that shape is stated under the label before anyone types, and required fields say so in words. A rejected form keeps your work: every entry comes back, and the problems stand at the top with focus moved onto them and repeated beside their own fields. Autocomplete hints are set on name, email and telephone.

Nothing that starts by itself

No part of this site refreshes, expires, slides, counts, plays sound or moves unless you ask, no session runs out while you read, and nothing covers the page. Two transitions exist, a fade as a section arrives and an underline on hover; where the browser reports a preference for reduced motion both are switched off outright. The language is declared as English as used in the United States.

Still unfixed here

The chart scrolls sideways below roughly 700 pixels of width, so a reader at 400 percent zoom pushes it left and right to reach December. A route in words is not the same as repairing the chart.

Two trip pages carry a departure table whose merged header cells one older browser and screen reader pairing reads out of order. Both are being rebuilt without merging.

Picture descriptions are uneven, some of six words and some of thirty, and the short ones skip which part of the season shows.

Testing was done by hand with a keyboard, at 400 percent zoom, in grayscale and with two screen readers on a laptop. It has not been done with speech input, a switch device or a screen reader on a phone. No conformance to a published standard is claimed here.

The form stays open every hour of every day of the year. What it collects is a request and not a reservation, a person reads it, and an answer is written within one business day.

An email naming the window, your dates and the number of travelers is handled exactly as a form entry would be. how a request becomes a held window sets out what follows a request, request a trip quote 24/7 is the longer form, and what gets asked most often before people commit answers what is asked most. Start with the weeks, not the country

This form takes requests every hour of every day, and a person answers within one business day. Nothing here commits you. No figure is charged at this end.

1. When you can travel

Rough is fine. Two windows are better than one, because some of these fall in the same fortnight.

How firm is that?
2. What you are asking about

No charge arises at this end and no card number is asked for or stored. What happens to what you send.
